MediaTek’s 2nm Chip Moves On-Device AI Forward

The Dimensity 9600 Pro brings TSMC’s 2nm process and agentic AI features to flagship phones, raising the stakes for efficient local computing.

MediaTek has unveiled the Dimensity 9600 Pro, a flagship smartphone processor built on TSMC’s 2-nanometer manufacturing process. Announced on September 15, 2026, the chip is among the first mobile platforms to bring the next-generation node to commercial smartphone silicon, while positioning local AI processing as its central feature rather than an add-on.

The launch also includes the Dimensity 9600M, a 3nm chip aimed at a wider premium-phone market. MediaTek said both processors are designed for increasingly autonomous smartphone experiences, including assistants that can operate continuously, coordinate tasks across applications and process more data on the device.

What changed

The 9600 Pro uses an all-big-core CPU design built around Arm’s latest C2 cores, paired with dual neural-processing units. MediaTek claims the architecture improves AI token generation per watt by 55% over the previous generation and accelerates large-language-model prefill by 51%. It also says the chip supports on-device mixture-of-experts models, edge training and hardware-based key-value-cache compression.

Those claims describe vendor testing rather than independent benchmarks. Still, the design points to a broader shift in how phone processors are being built: AI workloads are now shaping the memory system, scheduling engines, image pipeline and power-management architecture, not merely the dedicated NPU.

The chip is also designed for advanced imaging and video. MediaTek highlights direct coordination between the image signal processor and NPU, 4K HDR capture, subject tracking and hardware decoding for the H.266 video standard. Oppo separately announced that its upcoming Find X10 Pro Max will be among the first international phones to use the processor.

Why it matters

The practical contest in mobile AI is moving from cloud access to sustained local capability. Running more inference on a handset can reduce latency, preserve privacy and keep basic assistant functions available when connectivity is weak. It may also lower cloud costs for routine tasks such as summarization, translation, photo organization and personal context management.

The 2nm transition matters beyond one product. Smaller process nodes can improve the performance-per-watt envelope, which is especially important for phones that must run AI continuously without overheating or exhausting their batteries. MediaTek’s move also intensifies pressure on Qualcomm and other mobile-chip designers ahead of the next flagship cycle.

What remains uncertain

The largest unknown is whether the claimed efficiency gains will translate into noticeable user benefits. Battery life depends on software, modem activity, display power and thermal limits, while AI quality depends on models and developer support as much as silicon. The first commercial phones will provide the more meaningful test.

There is also a strategic question: will “agentic” phone features become genuinely useful, or mostly repackage existing assistants with more aggressive marketing? The answer will depend on permissions, privacy controls and app integration. For now, MediaTek has established an important hardware marker: the smartphone AI race is entering the 2nm era.
